Life Safety: Elevator Emergencies
The Fire Safety Director, upon notification that passengers have become trapped in a stopped elevator car(s), shall take the following actions:
- Call 911 to report the situation and notify Building Security.
- Establish communications with the stopped car(s).
- Instruct passengers to:
- Remain Calm
- Verify that the STOP button is not depressed.
- Report their location or last known location.
- Remain Calm
- Instruct passengers to:
- Try to Ascertain the following information:
- Number of and location(s) of stopped cars.
- Number of passengers in any stopped cars.
- Any medical emergencies involving trapped passengers.
- Number of and location(s) of stopped cars.
- Consider holding a working elevator car for the Fire Department to use upon their arrival.
- Locate and have available for the Fire Department any elevator keys.
